ILOILO – Shellfish from coastal waters around Gigantes Islands in Carles, Iloilo are not safe for human consumption.
They are “positive for paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit,” the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has warned.
Gigantes Islands were the only Western Visayan location in the latest red tide warning issued by the BFAR.
In Shellfish Bulletin No. 34 series of 2016 dated Nov. 11, the agency advised the public not to eat shellfish harvested from the following areas:
* Calubian, Leyte
* Gigantes Islands in Carles, Iloilo
* Leyte and Carigara Bay in Leyte
* Naval in Biliran province
* Milagros, Masbate
* Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar
* Irong-Irong and Cambatutay Bays in Western Samar
All types of shellfish and alamang from these areas may not be eaten, stated the bulletin signed by Agriculture undersecretary for fisheries and BFAR director Eduardo Gongona.
Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking, the bulletin said.
Meanwhile the BFAR said the following areas in Western Visayas and Negros Island Region are free from toxic red tide:
* coastal waters of Altavas, Batan and New Washington in Batan Bay (Aklan)
* Camanci and Mambuquiao in Batan, Aklan
* Pilar, Panay, President Roxas, and Roxas City in Capiz
* Sapian Bay (Ivisan and Sapian, Capiz)
* coastal waters of EB Magalona, Pontevedra, Palupandan, Valladolid, Talisay City, Silay City, Bacolod City, Hinigaran, Cadiz City, Victorias City, Bago City, Binalbagan, and San Enrique in Negros Occidental. (With Boy Ryan Zabal, Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
