BACOLOD City – The City Health Office (CHO) declared a cholera outbreak in Barangay Mandalagan as per Advisory No. 02 Series of 2022, dated Nov. 23, 2022.

Dr. Grace Tan, officer-in-charge (OIC) of the CHO, said the village recorded two confirmed cases, making it the city’s second barangay with cholera outbreak.

The Bacolod City Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (BCESU), as part of its surveillance activity, collected water samples from an open dug well in Purok Luhodluhod and another in Purok Ipil-ipil, which later turned out to be positive for the cholera bacteria.

These two open dug wells were near a possible source of contamination – a toilet.

Barangay Mandalagan already conducted chlorination and would be monitoring water sources.

On Oct. 25, the CHO declared an outbreak in Barangay Alijis after recording three cholera cases.

Cholera is caused by ingesting water or food that has been contaminated by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria, causing the infected person to suffer from severe diarrhea and vomiting, Tan said.

The CHO OIC advised the public to practice proper hygiene and sanitation, especially when preparing food, and ensure that drinking water is from potable water sources./PN
