MANILA – Bacolod Master Sardines faded in the overtime period to suffer a 107-100 defeat in the hands of the Bacoor Strikers in the 2019-2020 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Cup at the Strike Gymnasium in Bacoor, Cavite.

Gabriel Banal broke the hearts of the upset-seeking Bacolodnons on Tuesday night. He converted crucial three-pointers and free throws to power the Strikers to its eighth win in 10 matches.

Banal finished the match with double-double 29 points and 11 assists, while Mark Joseph Pangilinan and Michael Mabulac added 18 and 15 markers, respectively, for the Strikers.

After forcing an overtime with a triple from Bacolod’s Jopher Custodio, he surged his team ahead early in the extension with a triple before forcing a deadlock at 94-all on Mark Tallo’s free throws.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Banal gave the Strikers a 100-96 advantage but free throws by Nico Paolo Javelona and a layup by Dimas knotted the score anew at 100-all.

After the Strikers took a 103-100 lead on free throws by Banal, the Bacolod had a chance to tie it. The referees, however, did not call a foul on a Strikers player who held on to Tallo, forcing the latter to lose the ball.

Javelona had another solid outing for the Master Sardines with 27 points, while Custodio and Tallo added 23 and 17 markers, respectively, as they slumped to 3-7 win-loss slate./PN
