BACOLOD City – The members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) here urged the incoming Congress and the Department of Education (DepEd) to review the K-12 program.
On Wednesday, June 29, the city council approved a resolution urging the Congress and the DepEd for the review of the K-12, which was introduced in the country under Republic Act 10533, also known as the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013.”
The act aims to strengthen the curriculum and increase the number of years for basic education.
Councilor Renecito Novero, who authored the resolution, said there is a growing sentiment among many parents and school children regarding the practicality of the K-12 program.
“It adds two more years of financial burden to the parents and also adds two years to the academic requirements of the children which thus largely affects their opportunity to finish earlier their respective target professions,” he said.
The city councilor added that there is a need to review the K-12 program in light of the current realities which might include the possible options such as the following:
● integration of the senior high school tracks in the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-offered courses;
● calibration of the years spent in senior high school for purposes of qualifying the same as integral part of the four-year basic course in college; and
● conversion of the same as optional rather than mandatory for all, and such other modes by which the very purpose of the K-12 program may become more practicable and profitable for the children and less cumbersome to the parents.
A copy of the resolution will be furnished to the House of Representatives through its speaker, the Senate through its senate president and the DepEd through its secretary./PN
