MANILA – The Philippine women’s beach volleyball teams split their matches in the 29th Southeast Asian Beach Volleyball Championships at Palawan Beach in Sentosa Island, Singapore.
Negrense Bernadeth Pons and Cherry Rondina was first defeated by Thai’s Pair Numwong Rumpaipruet and Hongpak Khanittha, 15-21, 21-12, 15-5 on Thursday before bouncing back with a 21-14, 21-5 win over Malaysia’s Winnie Lim and Dawn Lynn.
Ilongga Fiola Ceballos and Bacolodnon Patty Orendain also halved their two matches by winning over Eliza Chong and Gladys Lee of Singapore, 21-10, 21-10, before losing to Vietnam’s Thi Hoa Mai and Thi Cam Thi Tran, 21-19, 22-20.
Pons and Rondina are already assured of a quarterfinals seat after finishing at second place in Group A, while Ceballos and Orendain needs to win its final match against Timor Leste to secure their spot.
In men’s action, the pair of Anthony Arbasto and Jude Garcia is also at second place in Pool B after splitting their games with a victory over Laos and a loss to the Thailand squad.
Fifteen teams each comprised the women’s and men’s competition from eight participating countries namely powerhouse Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos and Timor Leste.
