Bacolod’s MPBL team undergoes ‘massive’ revamp

After a dismal debut, Bacolod City will have a massive revamp ahead of the 2020- 2021 Chooks-To- Go Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Mumbaki Cup slated this year.
Bacolod City congressman Greg Gasataya told the Buzzer Beater on March 18 that they are currently in the process of finalizing the lineup by eyeing for former Philippine Basketball Association, University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) players to bolster the team.

“The Bacolod City team is rebuilding this offseason,” Gasataya said. “Former professional players, some UAAP and NCAA standouts and homegrown players will form part of the team.”
Bacolod’s squad, under head coach Vic Ycasiano, finished the 2019-2020 MPBL Lakan Cup season with an 11-19 win-loss card.

Among its key players from last season were Bacolodnon Nico Paolo Javelona, Ilonggo Yankie Haruna, Jopher Custodio, Jerick Canada, Jess Mar Villahermosa, and Simon Camacho.

Stephan Schröck credited his Philippine Azkals and Ceres–Negros Football Club teammates for helping him win his second Mr. Football Award during the San Miguel Corporation-Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night at the Manila Hotel.

The Filipino-German creative midfielder said that his teammates and the people behind the national team, along with Ceres–Negros were the ones responsible for making 2019 as one of the most successful in his career.

“To those who I’ve played with these years, the Azkals, the Asian Cup and the World Cup qualifiers played big roles last year. For Ceres-Negros, we had an unbelievable year. Unbeaten in the league, unbeaten in the cup, and made it almost to the (ASEAN) final again of the AFC cup,” Schröck stressed.

“I’m always very grateful to everyone who went with me through this path, not only for last year but over the last 20 years,” he added. “I’m also very grateful, especially to the management of bot teams, the coaches, the people behind the teams, and those who take care of Philippine football.”

The Ceres-Negros team captain also thanked his wife and kids for “sacrificing a lot for hisdreams and goals.”

The 33-year-old Schröck also won the same citation from the sports scribes back in 2013./PN
