MANILA – Amid the Supreme Court decision allowing the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos at Libingan ng mga Bayani, Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV believes that schools should continue to teach the history of the Martial law era.
Against the proposed hero’s burial for the late dictator, Aquino said that pushing for “truthful” and “objective” Martial law education is one of the ways to “move forward.”
“It’s really disappointing but we will continue to work with the Department of Education on truthful and accurate Martial law education. That’s how we can move forward,” said the chairperson of the Committee on Education.
Aquino said the nation can only move forward if the Marcos family apologizes for the abuses of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and returns the money they allegedly stole from government coffers.
“The young people have to be informed about the human rights abuses committed during the Marcos’ reign,” the senator stressed.
“Moving on is fine pero kung titingnan mo, wala naman silang perang binalik. Wala namang pagpapapatawad na hingi,” he added.
Citing historical records, Aquino said over 3,200 people were killed, 35,000 tortured, and 70,000 incarcerated during the dictatorial rule of Marcos.
Marcos and his family also stole about $10 billion in public funds, according to the Presidential Commission on Good Governance./PN
