MANILA – What do Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and United States president-elect Donald Trump have in common?
It is their “passion to serve,” said Duterte on Friday after being asked to comment on reports making comparisons between him and the American leader, also known for his tough talk on law and order.
Unlike Trump, a real estate developer whose reported net worth is $3.5 billion, the former Davao City mayor said he is just “a small molecule in this planet.”
The businessman who runs luxury hotels and casino resorts, on the other hand, is the president of “the most powerful country in the world,” the Philippine leader said during his arrival speech in Davao City.
Last Nov. 8, Duterte left the country for a two-country visit to Thailand and Malaysia.
“I am just a President struggling to barely to just above the water ang ano natin. I say I would have… you have to worry about ourselves first… You have to push more for the country,” he said.
Asked about the possible change in foreign policy under the Trump presidency, Duterte said that his partnership with China and the rest of the ASEAN remains.
“I will pursue what I’ve started. I am not into the habit of reneging on my word. I will sail the state of the nation, and it should be pushed by the wind of self-interest only; the self-interest of our nation.”
Duterte earlier congratulated Republican nominee Trump on his victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
