ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. has called on the support of approximately 1,500 Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) for the provincial government’s upcoming initiatives focused on food security and nutrition.

Defensor made this appeal during the BNS Big Day organized by the Iloilo Provincial BNS Federation and the Iloilo Provincial Nutrition Service under the Provincial Health Office (IPHO).

Held on January 9 at the Passi City Arena in Passi City, the event carried the theme “BNS as Frontline Movers for a Healthier Tomorrow.”

The governor emphasized the vital role of human resources, such as BNS, in addressing the health and nutrition needs of the community.

“The provincial government recognizes the importance of nutrition for the well-being of our people. This is why we are implementing programs that aim to address this vital aspect,” Defensor said.

He announced plans to launch a new program, through the Provincial Agriculture’s Office (PAgrO) and IPHO, that will focus on food security. According to Defensor, ensuring food security is key to achieving proper nutrition.

“Food security is the foundation of nutrition,” he stressed.

Defensor likened food to medicine, stating that it must be consumed in the right amount, kind, and at the right time to ensure health.

“Food is our medicine, and it should be taken in the right amount and at the right time. We need your help, along with Barangay Health Workers, to realize our upcoming programs,” he added.

The governor also expressed his gratitude to the BNS for their continued service in advocating good nutrition, which has significantly supported the province’s health system.

Meanwhile, during the event, the IPHO, led by Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, launched the Search for Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars 2025.

Other activities included a discussion on strengthening the competence of BNS, games, raffles, and a caroling contest.

Guests included Passi City’s Mayor Stephen Palmares, Liga ng mga Barangay Provincial Federation president Amalia Victoria Debuque, and 4th District’s Cong. Ferjenel Biron./PN
