MANILA – The Malacañang on Sunday welcomed the opposition Liberal Party’s (LP) statement rejecting the impeachment complaint filed against President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte.
“President Duterte being the duly elected leader of our country with no less than 16 million Filipinos who voted for him. Any act to remove him from office is an attempt to subvert the people’s will,” said presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella.
Deputy Majority Leader and Marikina representative Miro Quimbo said he and other LP congressmen met Vice President Leni Robredo last week to relay their “common consensus” on the impeachment issue.
“We strongly believe that the taking up by the House of Representatives of any impeachment complaint today will only be divisive as well as polarizing,” Quimbo said.
Abella believes that impeachment proceedings will have detrimental effect on the country.
“Any impeachment process would be counterproductive for the Philippines which has been described to be the fastest growing in Southeast Asia. We therefore have to seize our economic momentum and not de derailed by destructive politics,” the spokes said.
On March 16, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano filed the first impeachment complaint against Duterte. He accused the former Davao mayor of culpably violating the Constitution, engaging in bribery, betraying public trust, committong graft and corruption and other high crimes./PN
