MANILA – The College of St. Benilde Blazers captured the NCAA Season 92 men’s lawn tennis championship after a sweep of the elimination round at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts.
The Blazers completed its title run with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Season 91 champion San Beda Red Lions at the end of the single-round robin eliminations.
Trailing by a game after Blazers’ Ranha Reyes lost to Red Lions’ Vince Carlo Ramiscal, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, in the opening singles, the Blazers struck back with wins by Mav Victoria and Carl Catedral in the doubles and Jet Asilo in the reverse singles.
Victoria and Catedral blanked Red Lions’ Erick Fernandez and Whismark Basanal, 6-0, 6-0, to level the count at 1-1 before Asilo turned back Red Lions’ Andre Tuason, 6-4, 6-2, to seal the Blazers second NCAA title overall.
“I’m super happy. Our opponent did well and all of the teams were really good. It’s just the game is ours,” said Blazers head coach John Rey Moreno, who steered the school to its first title in 13 years.
San Sebastian College Stags, meanwhile, clinched the second place trophy following its 2-1 victory over the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights. The Red Lions were relegated to third place.
Francis Parangan edged Adjuthor Moralde, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), as Ramzie Manongsong and John Paul Gulfo trounced Ivan Valenzuela and Hilbert San Jose, 6-2, 6-4, to seal the win for the Stags.
In the juniors’ division, the Arellano University Braves won the championship after surviving the San Beda Red Cubs, 2-1. The Lyceum of the Philippines, meanwhile, University Junior Pirates bagged bronze./PN
