BACOLOD City – The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in this city has recorded 16 grass fire incidents in just a day.
Chief Inspector Stephen Jardeleza, city fire marshal, said the 16 grass fire incidents occurred on March 17 alone.
Records further showed that so far this year, the BFP has responded to a total of 326 fire incidents in Bacolod.
Of these, there were 269 non-structural fire incidents. Specifically, 209 were grass fires, 33 were rubbish fires, 23 were post fires, and four were sugar cane fires.
Jardeleza said grass fires consume the resources of the BFP because they take manpower, fuel, and, most importantly, water.
To address this, the city BFP plans to conduct controlled burning in the remaining grassland areas.
Jardeleza said he would be coordinating with the barangays and lot property owners.
Earlier, Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez encouraged the public to cut their grass to prevent fires that take up the city’s already low water supply./PN
