BACOLOD City – Councilors urged the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Negros Island Region to investigate the presence of suspected illegal drugs and deadly weapons in the Metro Bacolod District Jail.
Contraband items were seized during “Operation Greyhound” that BJMP-Negros and the Regional Special Operations Task Group staged at the facility in Barangay Handumanan on Dec. 9.
The incident “took place amid a national campaign … against the use of illegal drugs and corruption in government,” the Sangguniang Panlungsod said in a resolution authored by Councilor Ricardo Tan.
“The result of [Operation Greyhound] … was a hard blow to the present leadership of the BJMP in Bacolod City” and also “affects the credibility and integrity of the authorities in safeguarding the lives, liberty and properties of [Bacolodnons],” the city council said.
The city council asked the BJMP-Negros to furnish the local government a copy of the result of its investigation.
The operation around 4 a.m. on Dec. 9 was prompted by a tip that several vehicles were transporting undetermined items to the district jail, said Jail Inspector Mar Louie Salcedo, BJMP-Negros spokesperson./PN
