MANILA – Meralco Bolts is confident of its chances to force a do-or-die Game 7 when it faces Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings in Game 6 of the PBA Governors’ Cup finals tonight.
If Bolts head coach Norman Black were to be believed, they have figured out how to beat Kings, the defending champion.
“We’ll do what it takes to win. We understand the next game is do-or-die for us. We understand the situation,” Black said of their aim to force a Friday tiebreaker.
Kings looks to complete its back-to-back title conquest – and a repeat of its 2016 victory against Bolts in the same conference – when the game starts 7 p.m. at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
Ginebra is also aiming to capture its 10th PBA championship crown.
Kings moved closer to bagging the Governors’ Cup trophy after beating Bolts 85-74 in Game 5 on Sunday behind the 20-point effort of import Justin Brownlee.
Despite Ginebra having a 3-2 series lead, head coach Tim Cone remains wary of the opponent.
“Meralco has done a really good job of grinding out wins against us. And that’s what we’ve always tried to be about – a grind-out, defensive type team,” said the 19-time PBA champion coach.
“Winning Game 5 didn’t win us anything, but since the series is reduced to best-of-three, it’s always important to win the first game,” Cone added. “For sure, we’ll be fired up by Wednesday.”
Black said how Ginebra used its big men in Game 5 caught Bolts off guard.
“They started Greg (Slaughter), and they’re a lot bigger. I didn’t think we reacted very well to it,” he said.
“They (Ginebra) played very well. Their defense was pretty solid, and we got a little frustrated because of foul trouble. But we’ll be ready Wednesday,” added the one-time PBA Grand Slam coach./PN
