‘Bong’ Go visits Kalibo fire victims

KALIBO, Aklan – Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go visited the victims of the Kalibo public market fire to assess their situation and to promise assistance.

Go and the fire victims met on Thursday afternoon at the Kalibo Magsaysay Park.

The senator promised to assist the fire victims in their recovery with the help of local and national agencies after a pre-dawn fire gutted their stalls on Sept. 15.

The fire started at 12:25 a.m. and was put out around 11:37 a.m.

Eighty-percent of the market stalls or 276 stalls were destroyed along Toting Reyes Street in Barangay Andagao.

Go said he will ask President Rodrigo Duterte to fund the reconstruction of the market for P20 million.

“Pagandahin na natin ang public market ninyo,” he added.

“Huwag nating pababayaan ang mga kababayan nating nasunugan hanggang makabalik sila sa kanilang mga puwesto. Isa sa mga pangako ko, kahit saang sulok ng Pilipinas, kayo ay pupuntahan ko upang marinig ang mga hinaing ng ating mga kababayan. Nandito ako sa Kalibo para tumulong,” Go said.

Aklan governor Florencio Miraflores also expressed gratitude to the senator.

Along with his friends Robin Padilla and Philip Salvador, Go provided P2,000 and groceries to fire victims before leaving to Jamindan, Capiz.

During the meeting, Go announced he filed a fire modernization bill in the Senate to modernize and upgrade the Bureau of Fire Protection.

At this time, the local government of Kalibo is providing assistance and temporary selling area for the fire victims. The town legislative council declared a state of calamity to access the calamity fund.

Miraflores allowed the fire victims to use Toting Reyes Street, a provincial road, as temporary relocation site.(With Akean Forum/PN)
