MANILA – Former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., only son and namesake of the former president, has expressed his gratitude for the Supreme Court (SC) ruling.
Bongbong also thanked the “kind gesture” of President Rodrigo Duterte, who previously cited the law allowing Marcos Sr. to be buried at the heroes’ cemetery.
“Once again, the Supreme Court has taken a magnanimous act to uphold the rule of law… It is our sincerest hope that this will lead the nation towards healing as we endeavour to move the country forward to give every Filipino a better life,” the former senator said.
Senators Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, Risa Hontiveros and Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, on the other hand, voiced out their disappointment toward the high court’s decision.
Aquino said he would ensure that facts of martial law are being taught in schools.
“Though we must respect the outcome, my heart goes out to the thousands of victims during the darkest years in Philippine history… With this decision, we need to be even more vigilant that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. Never again,” the senator said.
Saying that the SC ruling is “not executory,” Hontiveros urged Duterte to reject the planned hero’s burial for the late Philippine leader.
“President Duterte is at a critical juncture in history. He could either stand up for truth and justice or submit himself as an instrument to the dictator family’s desperate attempt to rewrite history and clear their name. I urge the President to choose well,” she said.
Pangilinan maintained that Marcos is not a hero and called him a “reviled dictator” who “caused twenty years of political, economic and social havoc in the country.”/PN
