MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte is leaving it up to the court to decide on the petition filed against him by Sen. Leila de Lima.
“If there’s a case filed already, [e] di hayaan natin,” he said.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked both De Lima and the office of the Solicitor General to submit within 10 days their respective memorandum on the issue of whether President Duterte is immune from suit.
This after the senator filed a petition for habeas data, a legal remedy to secure information related to a person whose life or liberty is at risk, as she sought to defend herself from the accusations and tirades of Duterte.
“Mine was just to make public what was or is the corruption of the day and how drugs flourished inside our penal institutions and to this day they are still making money from the inside,” Duterte explained.
Duterte said that it’s not enough that drug lords are arrested and jailed as they still are able to operate while inside prison.
“They have to be immobilized,” he said.
Duterte has alleged that De Lima’s former driver and alleged lover collected money from drug lords detained at the New Bilibid Prison.
The president accused De Lima of using drug money to fund her 2016 senatorial campaign. (ABS-CBN News)
