ILOILO – Senior Inspector Jess Baylon, chief of the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center, was recognized for “neutralizing” a suspected illegal drug pusher.
He and four other Boracay officers received a Medalya ng Kagalingan (Philippine National Police Medal of Merit) in a ceremony at the Police Regional Office 6 headquarters in Camp Martin Delgado, Iloilo City.
Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, regional police director, gave the medals on Monday. Other recipients were Police Officers 1 Edwin Soberano Jr., Arvhey Ondillo, Joeffrey Base, and Brian Noma.
The officers staged a buy-bust operation that led to the death of the 35-year-old drug pushing suspect Rafe Diamante on Jan. 10 in Sitio Lugutan, Barangay Manoc-manoc, Boracay.
Rafe, a former security guard, was the third drug suspect to die this year in Western Visayas and the 22nd since the regional police launched the Oplan Double Barrel campaign against drug trafficking in July 2016.
Rafe sold to Baylon a sachet of shabu for P1,000. When Baylon introduced himself as a police officer and tried to handcuff Rafe, the latter drew a .38 revolver and pulled the trigger.
But Rafe’s gun malfunctioned, giving Baylon the chance to defend himself and shoot the suspect.
Gentiles congratulated the officers for a job well-done. He also reminded them to continue neutralizing drug personalities. (With PRO-6 PIO/PN)
