SAN JOSE, Antique – Prohibiting parking along the national highway is expected to lessen vehicular accidents, a police official said. Traffic enforcers and the police are now carrying out a “dry run” of the parking ban mandated by Municipal Ordinance No. 03-2016. Superintendent Norby Escobar is satisfied with the dry run, particularly with the cooperation of the transport sector. “[It shows that] the public appreciate the measure that addresses vehicular congestion along the national road,” Escobar told a recent Municipal Police Advisory Council meeting. According to Escobar, the difference is evident. “Everything was a mess back when almost all types of vehicles park on both sides of the highway any time of the day and slow down the flow of traffic,” he said. “Now everybody is happy to see the clean highway and the orderly flow of vehicles.” Escobar believes the full implementation of the traffic ordinance will lessen vehicular accidents, especially among motorcycles and tricycles. Some 258 vehicular accidents were recorded in this capital town in 2016, municipal police station records showed. Of these, 113 were cases of “reckless imprudence resulting to physical injuries”; 144 resulted in damage to property; and one was a case of “reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.” (PIA/PN)
