BORACAY – This world-famous island recorded 2 million tourist visits in 2017, the highest number so far, according to the Malay Municipal Tourism Office.

The exact number of tourist arrivals was 2,001,974, said Municipal Tourism Officer Felix De Los Santos.

“We recorded an increase of 16 percent compared to that in 2016,” added De Los Santos.

The local government had set a 2-million target for tourist arrivals in 2017.

Chinese tourists contributed to the most number of arrivals last year with 375,284, followed by Koreans with 356,644 and Taiwanese with 40,802, the Municipal Tourism Office records showed.

American tourists registered 22,640 arrivals in the island resort last year while Malaysians, 20, 585, the records further showed.

Following them were tourists from United Kingdom with 17,416 visits, Saudi Arabia with 15,944 visits, Australia with 15,365 visits, Russia with 14,074, and Singapore, 9,897.

The rest of the visits were of domestic tourists and Filipinos from abroad.

Last month, the island, together with other areas in Aklan, suffered from the effects of the onslaught of tropical depression “Vinta.”

The island had been flooded due to the heavy rains the storm brought and the poor drainage system./PN
