ILOILO City – The Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office 6 spearheaded a brown rice cooking contest among members of the Rural Improvement Clubs (RICs) in Western Visayas at the culminating activity of the National Rice Awareness Month celebration on Nov. 28.

There were five different dishes prepared by the participants in the cooking contest, with brown rice as the main ingredient. They were judged according to the palatability, nutritional value, simplicity of the dish or presentation and originality of the recipe.

According to DA-6 regional information officer Juvy S. Gaton, the participating contestants could use alternative food ingredients such as white corn, sweet potato, banana, rootcrops, vegetables, seafood and protein-rich food in their recipes as long as they could satisfy the judges’ taste.

The RIC of Cabatuan, Iloilo emerged as champion in the cooking contest with their recipe brown rice embutido roll in banana leaves.

Genoveva Reboles, RIC member of Cabatuan, said 10 brown rice embutido rolls can be made out of a P249-budget. Each roll could be sold at P50, earning a gross sale of P500.

The RIC of Leganes ranked second with their recipe rice lumpia and rice crockets, followed by the RIC of San Miguel with their brown rice ala San Miguel recipe.

RICs from the municipalities of Janiuay and Oton also took part in the rice cooking contest.

The top three winners received cooking utensils and cash prizes amounting to P5,000, P4,000 and P3,000, respectively. Non-winners also received P1,000./PN
