GUIMARAS – The entire municipality of Buenavista was placed under a state of calamity due to African Swine Fever (ASF).
Vice Mayor Cyril Beltran confirmed to Panay News that they conducted a special session yesterday morning to approve the resolution authored by Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Valentine Calabero, chairperson of the committee on agriculture, placing the town under a state of calamity.
Samples from three pigs sat a hog farm in Barangay Sawang tested positive for ASF.
Beltran said declaring a state of calamity allows the town to impose measures to prevent the spread of the hog disease.
“Basi maapektohan ang bilog nga banwa kag basi probinsya. So, as early as possible i-contain namon,” said Beltran.
Border checkpoints in all entry and exit points of Barangay Sawang have been set up to ensure no swine can leave the barangay.
A total of 22 swine, meanwhile, within the .5 kilometer radius from the ASF-affected farm were culled.
Beltran said the local government will release financial assistance to the affected hog farmer, but the exact amount is not yet determined.
“Tatlo ka mga baboy ang na-identify nga positive pero nag-decide na lang si Mayor Samuel Gumarin nga i-terminate ang tanan nga mga baboy within .5 kilometer radius,” Beltran said.
