PBA Board ousts Chito Narvasa
MAJORITY of the members of the Philippine Basketball Association Board have had enough of Andres “Chito” Narvasa.
They voted not to renew his contract as league commissioner during an emergency board meeting on Thursday.
Representatives from the MVP group – TNT KaTropa, NLEX Road Warriors and Meralco Bolts – and independent teams Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, Alaska Aces, Blackwater Elite, and Phoenix Fuel Masters agreed to oust Narvasa.
Three teams from the SMC group – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings, San Miguel Beermen and Star Hotshots – and known “allies” Kia Picanto and GlobalPort Batang Pier did not send representatives to the meeting.
The PBA Board clarified that the ouster of Narvasa was not due to his approval of the controversial Picanto-Beermen trade but about some hasty changes he had done in the league.
“It’s a simple loss of confidence, among other things, including performance,” said incoming league chairman Ramoncito Fernandez. “The trade was not the main issue. It’s really a loss of confidence already.”
The position is now vacant and a new commissioner will be appointed if the PBA Board reaches a two-thirds vote. Deputy Commissioner Rickie Santos was elected officer-in-charge for now.
While many are rejoicing with the ouster of Narvasa, his removal also left some PBA fans worried, especially with regard to the players to be borrowed for the Gilas Pilipinas campaign in the FIBA World Cup qualifier later this month.
Without a full-fledged commissioner handling the league, there is no one who could compel the five Narvasa-allied teams to lend their players to the national pool, which could hurt the composition of Gilas.
Among the players in the Gilas pool from the five squads are June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, Terrence Romeo, Kevin Ferrer, Von Pessumal, Russel Escoto, Jio Jalalon, and LA Revilla.

BLIND ITEM: A number of role players from a collegiate volleyball team could be headed to the exit door if ever the champion coach reconsiders his decision to leave the squad.
A source told Buzzer Beater at least three to four players from the squad have badmouthed their head coach through the school’s top official that led them to initially fire the mentor.
“Ang daming nakakarinig na schoolmates nila na hayagang binibira si coach. Kesyo hard training daw tapos hindi naman palalaruin. E kung ayaw pala nila ng ganoon, bakit nagtitiis sila?”
