MANILA – Marian Jade Capadocia clinched the 36th Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open women singles title after her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Clarice Patrimonio at the PCA indoor shell-clay courts in Paco.
The San Jose, Antique native banked on her deep experience to dethrone Patrimonio on Sunday and claim her first PCA Open title since winning four straight from 2011 to 2014.
“I’m just so happy for winning again. It’s like winning my first crown. My hard work really paid off,” said Capadocia.
Patrimonio, the 2015 and 2016 PCA Open champion, could have forced a third and deciding set if not for her crucial errors in the second set that allowed Capadocia to pull off a 4-1 lead.
On their way to the championship round, Capadocia defeated Akiko de Guzman 6-1, 6-0 while Patrimonio eliminated Shaira Rivera in the tiebreak 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (5).
Capadocia, who was set to play for Arellano University in the NCAA later this month, took home a P50,000 cash prize while Patrimonio got P25,000.
In the men singles, International Tennis Federation juniors campaigner John Bryan Otico stunned 2016 PCA Open champion Patrick John Tierro 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4.
“I just can’t explain how I feel right now,” said Otico, who pocketed the P100,000 top purse. “It was a good run, especially beating the defending champion and winning this whole thing.”/PN
