CAPIZ – Capizeños are currently undergoing training on bamboo craft-making at the Capiz State University (CapSU)-Dumarao satellite college in Dumarao town.
Implemented under the Capiz Institute of Living Traditions (CILT), the training aims to protect, sustain, research, document, promote, and develop bamboo craft-making as an intangible cultural heritage of the province.
Eighteen participants were grouped into batches, the first of which started on Nov. 14 until Nov. 20. They comprised women, students, indigenous people, and craftsmen from the municipalities of Cuartero, Dao and Dumarao.
The second batch will run on Nov. 22 to 28 in Sigma town, and the third is scheduled on Dec. 12 to 18 in Cuartero.
Capiz Bamboo Council vice president Randy Fancubila discussed the basics of bamboo craft-making.
Fancubila is a recognized farmer scientist, or Magsasaka Siyentista (MS) for bamboo and engineered bamboo technology, by the Western Visayas Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (WESVARRDEC).
The training is being conducted by the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO) in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). (With reports from PIA and Capiz Tourism and Cultural Affairs)/PN
