ILOILO City – In Barangay Mayang, Tubungan, Iloilo, a resident was accused of violating the anti-carnapping law.
The 22-year-old Ivan Puno was detained at the municipal police station after his arrest around 2 p.m. on Aug. 25.
Officers served him an arrest warrant issued by Judge Nelita Jesusa Bacaling of the Regional Trial Court Branch 67 (Guimbal), a police report showed.
Judge Bacaling set a hefty P180,000 as bail bond.
The New Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016 was one of the new measures that the Duterte administration allowed to lapse into law. It repeals RA 6539, or The Anti-Carnapping Act of 1972.
Under the new law, a person found guilty of car theft would be penalized with 20 to 30 years of jail term. The old law only imposes 14 years and eight months to 17 years and four months imprisonment.
If violence, intimidation or use of force were used, the person found guilty would be imprisoned for 30 years and one day to 40 years.
When the owner, driver or occupant of the carnapped motor vehicle was killed or raped, the person found guilty would be sentenced to life imprisonment./PN
