ILOILO – Good news to this province’s delegates to the recent Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet 2023 held in Aklan from April 26 until yesterday, April 30.
The provincial government will be giving cash incentives to athletes who win medals (either gold, silver or bronze).
Their coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, and chaperones will receive cash incentives, too.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. said Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-217 mandates rewards and recognition to athletes (and their coaches, assistant coaches, trainers and chaperones) who excel in sports competitions sanctioned by the Department of Education, the Philippine Sports Commission, and the Philippines Olympic Committee.
“Gusto gid man naton tagaan premyo ang aton mga achievers, and we have an ordinance. We have this basis,” Defensor told the Iloilo Provincial Capitol Press Corps.
Under the provincial ordinance, WVRAA medalists will be receiving the following:
For athletes
* Gold – P5,000
* Silver – P3,000
* Bronze – P2,000
For coach
* Gold – P5,000
* Silver – P3,000
* Bronze – P2,000
For assistant coach
* Gold – P3,000
* Silver – P2,5000
* Bronze – P2,000
For trainer
* Gold – P5,000
* Silver – P3,000
* Bronze – P2,000
For chaperone
* Gold – P2,000
* Silver – P1,500
* Bronze – P1,000
Athletes receiving the reward and recognition must meet the following requirements:
* He/she must be a Filipino citizen.
* He/she must be a bona fide resident of Iloilo and must have duly represented the province in the sports competitions in which he/she participated.
* Has brought pride and honor to the province because of his/her achievement.
* A gold/silver/bronze medalist or a combination thereof in regional, national and international competitions in any sports discipline event recognized and sanctioned by the Department of Education, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee.
* He/she must either be in individual, dual or team events.
The documentary requirements are the following:
* Certified true copy of birth certificate issued by the Philippine Statistic Authority.
* Barangay certification of residency or voter’s affidavit
* Valid ID of the awardee(s)
* In case an athlete is a minor, parents or guardians’ voter affidavit and valid identification card.
* Proof of winning (medal, trophy, certificate of award, and awarding ceremony picture).
Iloilo sent a delegation of more than 700 athletes, coaches and trainers, among others.
There were 24 sports events in the secondary level and 15 sports events in the elementary level. These were archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball 3×3, basketball elementary and secondary, billiards, boxing, chess, dance sport, football, futsal, gymnastics, para games, goalball, bocce, pencak silat, sepak takraw elementary and secondary, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis elementary and secondary, volleyball elementary boys and girls, volleyball secondary boys and girls, wrestling, and wushu.
The Iloilo elementary boys football team completed its dominance in the 2023 WVRAA Meet with a 2-1 beating of Negros Occidental in the finals on Saturday night at the Aklan Sports Complex.
Team Iloilo also kept their secondary boys basketball dominance. They defeated Negros Occidental in the finals, 95-74, on Sunday morning at the Ibajay Covered Court.
Iloilo also showed its dominance in arnis, athletics and swimming. Its athletes won golds, silvers and bronzes./PN
