CEBU City – The provincial government of Cebu turned over marine sanctuary cordon ropes and marker buoys worth P2.2 million to 39 local government units in the province.

Provincial Administrator Mark Tolentino and Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Rodel Bontuyan led the distribution of the equipment on Nov. 27, according to the capitol’s public information officer Oscar Pineda.

The marker buoys and cordon ropes are intended to ward fishermen off marine protected areas where fishing is prohibited.

This will ensure the reproduction of marine species as their fingerlings are protected.

The distribution of the marine sanctuary equipment was a part of the provincial government’s environmental protection program.

Pineda said the provincial government will be distributing more equipment worth P3.5 million before the year ends.

There are 154 marine sanctuaries across Cebu province. (PNA/PN)
