SAN JOSE, Antique – Senior high school students in the province attended a forum that aims to spread awareness on illegal recruitment and human trafficking.
The students were from schools in Anini-y, Tobias Fornier, San Jose, Sibalom, San Remigio, Patnongon, and Valderrama towns.
The provincial government and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) organized the campaign forum.
OWWA regional director Wilfreda Misterio said the campaign forum targeted senior high school students because “we want them to know the legal way of applying for work abroad so they would be protected.”
Misterio stressed that there are many recruitment agencies that take advantage of Filipinos who are “desperate and more than willing to live abroad to earn more money.”
She cited the case of Filipinos who were supposed to work as domestic helpers in Hong Kong but were sent to Russia instead.
According to Misterio, Filipinos who want to work abroad must go to the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency to check if the agency that recruits them has license and valid job orders.
“Be careful also with online recruitment,” Misterio added.
Currently, there are 28,597 overseas Filipino workers from Antique, 3,275 are from this capital town and 3,273 from Sibalom town.
For her part, provincial planning and development coordinator Juliana Cepe said the OWWA satellite office in the province is available to assist OFWs and their families.
“Just feel free to come to the office so we could bridge you to the OWWA regional office whenever there are problems and concerns that would arise,” Cepe said.
