MANILA – A suspect in a road rage in Cebu City surrendered to the Police Regional Office 7 (PRO-7) on Tuesday.

David Lim Jr. turned himself in at 2 a.m. He was accompanied by mother Bebong Lim, two relatives and lawyer Jun Salatandre, the PRO-7 director Chief Superintendent Noli Taliño said in a radio interview.

Taliño said he received surrender feelers from Lim through President Rodrigo Duterte’s top aide Christopher Go on Monday, the same day he and Cebu City mayor Tomas Osmeña raided Lim’s house.

Nakipag-ugnayan itong family ni David Lim Jr. Nagpadala siya ng surrender feeler kay Secretary Bong Go at iyon nga ang nagsabi sa akin na makipag-ugnayan sa mother,” Taliño said.

Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, Philippine National Police chief, clarified in a news conference on Tuesday that Lim was not given special treatment but the police ensured his safety.

“It’s just normal sa isang mother na gusto niyang mag-surrender ang anak niya peacefully, na hindi ma-harm, na humanap ng linya na makausap kung pwedeng i-voluntary surrender iyong anak nila,” Dela Rosa said.

Lim is a nephew of Peter Lim, whom President Rodrigo Duterte tagged as a drug trafficker. Peter Lim denied his alleged links to the trade.

David Lim Jr. is accused of shooting 33-year-old nurse Ephraim Nuñal. A video of the Sunday incident became viral on social media.

‘SELF-DEFENSE’
Salatandre, in a televised news conference, said his client was just defending himself when he shot Nuñal. The lawyer claimed that the viral video was cut short to make his client appear guilty.

“My client is very sober and calm. He is not the kind of person projected by some people,” Salatandre said. “I am challenging the owner of the video to release the uncut version.”

The video showed Lim confronting Nuñal before heading back to his car to get a firearm and shoot the latter three times. Lim and girlfriend Tamae Takahashi then left on board his Mercedes Benz.

Salatandre claimed Lim fired at Nuñal only when the latter’s two “bigger and taller” companions started getting out of their cars.

“While my client was driving, two cars tailing him kept honking their horns, prompting my client to stop his car and confront the victim and his two companions. A brawl ensued,” said the lawyer.

“There was no intention to hurt the victim,” said Salatandre. “But he kept coming near David and he has two companions coming out of the car, so my client was forced to shoot him on the legs to disable him.”/PN
