MANILA – Stephan Schrock scored the go-ahead goal to lift Ceres Negros to a 1-0 victory over Kaya Makati in the first leg of their Philippines Football League semifinal games on Sunday at the Umak Stadium in Makati City.
Playing as the away team, Ceres can barge into the finals if it keeps Kaya at bay in Leg 2 next Sunday at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Both teams struggled to score early in the game. Ceres’ Omid Nazari and Iain Ramsay and Kaya’s Jordan Mintah and Robert Lopez-Mendy attempted but misfired.
Kaya dominated the possession midway in the first half. Miguel Tanton had two chances to score but his shots were defended by Ceres.
Carli de Murga also two chances to push Ceres early in the second half but his free kick hit the crossbar while his header from the miss went beyond the target.
Kaya turned aggressive late in the game. But shot attempts from Ilonggo Jovin Bedic, Antonio Ugarte and Lopez-Mendy were all defended by Ceres goalkeeper Roland Muller.
Ceres finally took the lead in injury time as Schrock wiggled across the tough Kaya defense before curling in a left-footed winner past the defense of goalkeeper Ref Cuaresma.
In case of a tie after the two-leg semis, the away goals rule will kick in – the team with the most goals in their away game will progress. If both teams are still tied, the match will proceed to extra time, and to penalties if necessary./PN
