MANILA – NLEX-SCTEX Road Warriors leaned on the hot hands of John Byron Villarias and Jaypee Belencion to clinch the 2017 Marikina City Basketball League title with a 93-84 win over R. Lapids-Tito Rex at the Marikina Sports Center.
Villarias and Belencion – both with Ilonggo roots – finished with 19 and 18 points, respectively, for Road Warriors, which swept its way in the annual tournament.
Road Warriors was on the lead for most of the way on Sunday behind the hot shooting of Villarias, Belencion and Olaide Adeogun but R. Lapids-Tito Rex kept the match close 81-89 with less than two minutes left.
- Lapids-Tito Rex had a chance to pull even closer but misfired. Free throws from Belencion sealed the victory for NLEX-SCTEX.
Villarias was later named the Finals Most Valuable Player. He was also taken in the Mythical Five along with teammate Alfred Batino, Ronjay Buenafe of Hobe Bihon-Macway Travel, Mike Ayonayon of L&J 2 Go Home Spa, and Ryan Costelo of R. Lapids-Tito Rex.
Also in Jojo Lastimosa-mentored Road Warriors were Van Abatayo, Roldan Sara, Mike Calomot, Felix Apreku, Arvin Vitug, Ernest Reyes, Jeckster Apinan, Dominick Fajardo, Borgie Hermida, Mark Pangilinan, Jerby del Rosario, and Ervin Sotto.
On its way to the finals, Road Warriors defeated FEU NMRF/Cars Unlimited (91-86), R. Lapids-Tito Rex (90-76) and Hobe Bihon-Macway Travel in the single round-robin semifinals./PN
