FERNANDO Rodriguez scored a go-ahead goal as Ceres Negros defeated Kaya Makati 3-2 in the Philippines Football League on Saturday night at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
The Negros Occidental-based club snatched the victory after a 2-2 deadlock when Rodriguez converted on a pass inside the box with just over a minute left in the game.
Kaya gained the early lead when Jordan Mintah scored on a cross by Robert Lopez Mendy in the third minute. Ceres was quick to equalize on a header by Bienvenido Marañon.
Ceres grabbed the 2-1 lead just before halftime break when Rodriguez scored past the defense of Kaya’s Janrick Soriano. The scores reached the 2-2 tie on an Alfred Osei goal.
After the equalizer, tempers flared from both squads. Ceres head coach Risto Vidakovic was sent off for complaining about a non-call on his player Ronald Mueller, who was hit in the head during Osei’s conversion.
A few minutes later, Ceres’ Jeffrey Christiaens was also ejected after incurring a second yellow card for his hard challenge on an opponent.
“We are very proud of our players because we played and won against 11 players, plus the referees,” said Ceres assistant coach Ian Treyes. “It won’t be good for Philippine football if the PFL won’t fix its officiating issues.”
Ceres improved to third place after the home court win with 38 points on 12 wins, two draws and three losses. Kaya is on second place with 41 points on 12 wins, five draws and seven losses./PN
