ILOILO City – The two power firms operating coal-fired power plants in Iloilo should have constant monitoring of the health of residents surrounding their plants, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Western Visayas.
Regional Director Jim Sampulna called out independent power producers Global Business Power in La Paz district here and the Palm Concepcion Power Corp. in Concepcion, Iloilo recently.
He said DENR was preparing a memorandum of agreement with both power firms on the monitoring of communities surrounding their plants.
There have been complaints from residents about getting scabies and even lung diseases due to the alleged pollutants emitted by the power plants.
“I requested to have a constant monitoring of the health of the people surrounding the factory. I also requested them to have a clinic for those people around them,” said Sampulna.
Currently, DENR Region 6 has real-time monitoring of the pollution emissions of the firms. (PNA/PN)
