ILOILO City – Police arrested yesterday a resident of Gran Plains Subdivision in Jaro district charged with violation of a 1979 law penalizing the issuance of checks without sufficient fund or credit.
Officers from the Jaro police station’s Warrant and Subpoena Section served the 33-year-old Francis Leo Descaya with a warrant of arrest around 10 a.m. in Barangay Roxas Village, City Proper.
Descaya of Phase 2, Kamantigue Street, Gran Plains Subdivision was accused of violating Batas Pambansa Blg. 22.
The “Act penalizing the making or drawing and issuance of a check without sufficient funds or credit and for other purposes” was approved on April 3, 1979.
Anyone guilty of the crime “shall be punished by imprisonment of not less than 30 days but not more than one year, or a fine of not less than but not more than double the amount of the check, [and] shall in no case exceed P200,000,” or both, at the court’s discretion.
Acting Presiding Judge Eugene C. Cabardo of the Municipal Trial Court in Cities Branch 7 issued the arrest warrant against Descaya on July 18 and set the bail at P5,000, a police report showed./PN
