BACOLOD City – Councilor Sonya Verdeflor wants the city government to promote awareness on child autism.
Verdeflor sought the enforcement of City Ordinance No. 651 series of 2013, which provides for local government support to advocacy programs for children with autism and special needs.
Section 4 of the ordinance stated that January of every year is the Autism Awareness and Support Advocacy Month.
City hall and the Sangguniang Panlungsod should come up with month-long activities raising awareness on and encouraging full support to the development, rehabilitation and benefit of children with autism and special needs, Verdeflor said.
Private organizations advocating for children with autism and special needs and the Bacolod City Special Children’s Board may be tapped, she said.
A P500,000 fund should be allocated for the celebration of the Autism Awareness and Support Advocacy Month, the ordinance stated.
The city government may start next month, Verdeflor said in a resolution.
She said a copy of her resolution will be sent to the Office of the City Mayor and the Department of Education – Division of Bacolod City./PN
