MANILA – Bacolod City-based Cataract Foundation Philippines, Inc. (CFPI) has turned over a handheld keratometer to Dr. Nathaniel Chan, the only pediatric ophthalmologist in Western Visayas and Negros Island Region.
A keratometer, or refractor, is used to detect and treat astigmatism.
The instrument also has a refractometer, which measures the refractive error and distribution of glasses.
“Thousands of children” with visual impairment will benefit from the handheld refractor funded by the nonprofit international development organization Christoffel-Blindenmission (CBM), Chan said.
“We do 20 to 35 free cataract operations for children every year,” said the pediatric ophthalmologist, whose patients come from as far as Palawan and Mindanao.
Between 2003 and 2004, Chan served as a clinical fellow in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the Children’s National Medical Center in George Washington University in the United States.
The CBM, together with the CFPI and its partners, work to ensure eye health services are integrated in local health systems./PN
