SAN JOSE, Antique – Malnutrition among children continues to pervade the province.

Antique had the highest prevalence of malnutrition in Western Visayas in 2016 with 6.86 percent, but this has already lowered from 8.02 percent in 2015.

Negros Occidental followed with 5.96 percent, according to the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 6.

Several government agencies continues to cover statistics from Negros Occidental that is now geographically under Negros Island Region.

Iloilo had a 4.79-percent malnutrition prevalence; Aklan, 4.65 percent; Capiz, 4.38 percent; and Guimaras, 2.9 percent, NNC data showed.

The NNC noted that undernutrition among preschool children in Western Visayas has been on a downturn for six years now.

The prevalence of undernutrition in all six provinces in the region in 2016 was lower compared to that in 2015, the agency said.

From 7.59 percent in 2011, it consistently dropped to 7.05 percent in 2012, 6.38 percent in 2013, 6.21 percent in 2014, 5.58 percent in 2015, and 5 percent in 2016, NNC Region 6 data showed.

Meanwhile the number of stunted children in the region also dropped to 83,934 in 2016 from 91,712 in 2015.

NNC regional director Nona B. Tad-y said they will continue to mobilize local government units to intensify programs on nutrition and strengthen nutrition program management.

They will also provide more training for barangay nutrition scholars and make nutrition committees more functional. (PNA)
