BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod approved a resolution requesting the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to provide free internet in public schools, libraries, parks, and government institutions in the city.
Councilor Caesar Distrito, who authored the resolution, said this is in line with the National Broadband Plan (NBP) of the national government.
The NBP aims to provide an “open, pervasive, inclusive, affordable, and trusted broadband internet connection all over the country.”
“The quality of internet connection in the Philippines is a longstanding issue. The NBP addresses this,” Distrito said.
Furthermore, he said a city ordinance that will support NBP will be made.
“The use of internet has been found to be reliable and efficient when it comes to information and communication, especially for educational purposes,” he said.
However, the city does not have the budget to fund wireless internet connection in schools and public places, said the councilor. “That is why we appealed to the DICT.”/PN
