ILOILO City – The City Tourism and Development Office (CTDO) is staging the first ever Iloilo City Giant Lantern Festival next month with the theme “Viva Parol: Kasanag kag Duag sang Paskwa.”
Mayor Jose Espinosa III said Christmas lanterns symbolize the birth of Jesus Christ and the festival will make the holidays more festive.
The contest is open to all 180 barangays.
A brief description of the design, materials to be used and entry form must be submitted to CTDO not later than 5 p.m. on Nov. 24.
The lantern display will start on Dec. 8 along Muelle Loney Street and will run until Jan. 6, 2018.
Judging will be on Dec. 13 based on the following criteria:
* originality or uniqueness – 40 percent
* creativity or lighting and design – 40 percent
* workmanship or utilization of recycled and indigenous materials – 20 percent
The awarding of winners is on Dec. 15 during the city hall Christmas party at Plaza Libertad.
First place winner will receive P50,000; second placer, P40,000; third placer, P30,000; and P5,000 each as consolation prizes to seven entries.
The winning entries will automatically become the property of the city government. Other entries must be picked up by the owners on Jan. 7, 2018.
Only one entry per barangay is allowed. The body of the lantern must be 6 ft in height and 6 ft in width excluding the tassels, with either handmade traditional or modernized design.
Final product must be made of recycled and indigenous materials. Use of paint and electric bulbs are encouraged, however, participants must provide own electric extension wires and must secure the hanging of lanterns.
No candles will be used.
The lanterns must be sturdy enough to withstand the open weather upon display. In case of any weather disturbance, participants are responsible for temporarily pulling out the lanterns.
There will be no alteration allowed once the entry is submitted. Minor repairs such as changing of bulbs, retouching of paint and re-gluing will be allowed after securing permission from the organizer. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
