ILOILO City – A former police officer was named a suspect in the death of a motorcycle driver in Barangay Cabugao, Calinog, Iloilo.
Avelino Chiva of Barangay Poblacion, Calinog is a subject of a police manhunt, said Senior Inspector Rolando Fangena, municipal police chief.
The victim was 21-year-old Rey Nalaunan of Barangay Cahigon, Calinog, said to be a suitor of Chiva’s live-in partner. He was shot by a bonnet-wearing man around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The victim was driving a motorcycle with a sister and a friend as back riders. The gunman stopped them.
After the man ordered the back riders to move away from the motorcycle, he shot Nalaunan six times, said Fangena.
The gunman fled using Nalaunan’s motorcycle.
The Calinog police believed the gunman was a hired assassin.
“It was obvious that the victim was the target. The gunman left the back riders unharmed,” said Fangena.
From what the Calinog police so far gathered, Chiva learned that his live-in partner was being wooed by Nalaunan and on Oct. 17 warned the victim’s parents.
“Actually, we already identified the triggerman. A murder complaint will be filed against him and Chiva,” said Fangena.
Before the gunman pulled the trigger, he allegedly told Nalaunan, “Asawa sang iban amo ang imo!”/PN
