ILOILO City – The local government will conduct a citywide cleanup on Aug. 18.
“We are expecting tons of solid waste,” said City Environment and Natural Resources Office head Noel Hechanova.
All 180 barangays were enjoined to participate in the cleanup drive that will start at 6 a.m.
Village chiefs will identify their cleaning sites and pickup points to make gathering easy for garbage collectors.
“Perhaps this is the first time that all barangays will get involved in a cleanup,” Hechanova said.
The city government also invited national government agencies, schools and city hall employees to participate.
Hechanova said they will particular attention to garbage left behind or thrown onto the streets.
He clarified that the activity – in line with the 81st Charter Day anniversary celebration on Aug. 25 – only complements the existing waste management efforts of the local government.
“Our regular program on the apprehension of those who violate the anti-littering ordinance is still there. Barangays also have their respective regular cleanup drives. This is just to raise awareness (on proper waste disposal),” said Hechanova.
General Services Office Joren Sartorio earlier said the city generates around 300 tons of wastes daily. (PNA)
