ILOILO — With a surge in passenger traffic expected at ports across Iloilo City and the province as the New Year approaches, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)–Iloilo has advised travelers to closely monitor sea trip schedules and arrive early at ports to ensure smooth and safe travel.
The advisory comes amid heightened passenger movement from the holiday period through January 5, 2025, when many workers are expected to return to their places of employment.
In a public advisory posted on its official Facebook page, PCG–Iloilo warned that sea trips within its area of responsibility may be limited or reduced during the holiday season due to operational and safety considerations.
“The public is hereby advised that sea trips within the area of responsibility of Coast Guard Station Iloilo may be limited or reduced during the holiday season due to operational and safety considerations,” the PCG–Iloilo said.
Passengers and the riding public were strongly advised to monitor official announcements from shipping lines and port authorities, confirm trip schedules prior to travel, arrive early at ports and terminals, and strictly comply with safety, security, and port regulations.
The Coast Guard assured the public that measures are in place to ensure the safety of passengers, vessels, and maritime operations during the peak travel period, calling for cooperation and understanding from travelers.
From December 20 to 26, PCG–Iloilo recorded more than 160,000 passengers passing through various ports and terminals in Iloilo City and the province, including Lapuz Wharf, Dumangas Port, Estancia Port, and Ajuy Port.
Data showed around 71,882 inbound passengers and 89,533 outbound passengers during the period, reflecting a higher volume compared to the same timeframe last year.
In response to the increased passenger traffic, the Philippine Coast Guard District Western Visayas (CGDWV) placed all its stations and sub-stations on heightened alert from December 20 until January 4.
Stations under heightened alert include those in Iloilo, Aklan, Guimaras, Antique, and Capiz.
To ensure passenger safety, security, and comfort, port monitoring has been intensified, PCG personnel have been strategically deployed, and the Department of Transportation’s Malasakit Help Desk has been activated at key ports and passenger terminals across the region to provide immediate assistance and medical support when necessary.
