BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) banned sponsorship and sale of Coca-Cola products during the entire MassKara Festival.
On Sept. 26, the SP unanimously voted in favor of the resolution imposing the ban.
The resolution, authored by Councilor Cindy Rojas, supported the appeal of sugar industry planters and workers, who are suffering due to the drop of domestic sugar prices brought by the import of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).
Early this year, the planters and workers protested against Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines, Inc. upon learning that the company uses HFCS in their products instead of locally-produced sugar.
The planters and workers considered the act as an “insult” to the province, which is dubbed as the Sugar Capital of the Philippines, Rojas said.
Several local government units in the province have banned Coca-Cola products in their festivals. These include the towns of Pontevedra, Hinigaran and Isabela and La Carlota City.
The provincial government also banned Coca-Cola products during the Panaad Festival.
Rojas said the city government, through the resolution, expressed its solidarity and sympathy to all the affected sugar industry dependents./PN
