KALIBO, Aklan – Police aim to have “zero major crimes” during the Ati-Atihan Festival this coming Jan. 6 to 15, 2017.
During the 2016 edition, no significant crimes were reported despite the estimated thousands of devotees and merrymakers who flocked to this capital town for the “mother of all Philippine festivals.”
Law enforcers and festival organizer Kalibo Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi) were closely coordinating to avert untoward incidents, said Chief Inspector Terence Paul Sta. Ana, municipal police chief.
Kasafi asked the police to suspend all permits to carry firearms outside of residence in the entire duration of the festival.
On Dec. 1 Sta. Ana presented the proposed gun ban before the Sangguniang Bayan.
“This is my first time to experience Ati-Atihan,” he said. “Security and traffic management is a big challenge.”
Police will also set up checkpoints and chokepoints, and assistance centers near festival venues.
Traffic personnel and Barangay Peacekeeping Action Teams will be tapped to regulate vehicular congestion.
Additional personnel from the Police Regional Office 6, the Philippine Army and force multipliers — including Explosives and Ordnance Division officers and K-9 units — will augment the local security force. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
