BACOLOD City – Police in Negros Island Region will not seal the muzzles of their service firearms this holiday season.
Director General Ronald dela Rosa, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, on Monday said they are breaking tradition to show the public that the officers are disciplined and responsible enough in handling guns.
The PNP started sealing the muzzles of their firearms in the early 1990s to discourage them from indiscriminate firing during the holidays.
But this is not going to happen this year.
“We are still in a war on drugs,” said Chief Inspector Dianne Grace Catedral, Police Regional Office 18 spokesperson.
“We need to give our policemen our trust and show the community that our PNP is responsible enough in handling their service firearms and will only use them in legal police operations,” she added.
But Catedral said the regional headquarters has not yet received any official communication on the order.
Still, the spokesperson warned her fellow officers to use their service firearms only if they or civilians are in danger.
Indiscriminate firing is an administrative offense under grave misconduct and conduct unbecoming of a police officer, and an officer found guilty may face dismissal from the service, she said./PN
