BACOLOD City – Police across Negros Island Region remain on full alert as the Simbang Gabi (dawn masses) start today.

Stations were ordered to set up random checkpoints to deter criminal elements, said Chief Inspector Dianne Grace Catedral, regional police spokesperson.

They were also told to put up assistance hubs in churches, shopping malls and transport terminals.

In September President Rodrigo Duterte placed the country under a state of emergency on account of lawless violence after a bombing in Davao City.

The order prompted the police to be on full alert and the armed forces to help the police in internal security operations.

Firecracker vendors were also reminded to strictly abide by Republic Act 7183, or the Act Regulating the Sale, Manufacture, Distribution, and Use of Firecrackers and other Pyrotechnic Devices.

“We at the PNP (Philippine National Police) assure the communities safe Christmas and New Year,” said Catedral. “We are wishing them a merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year.”

Meanwhile Reverend Father Felix Pasquin said attending Aguinaldo mass should be part of the Catholic community’s Christmas celebration.

Pasquin encouraged the public to think of what they could give to others rather than what they could receive during this season of gift-giving.

“Generosity and grace of the Lord should always be prioritized, and that we should imitate Him,” said the priest./PN
