ILOILO – The elderly made up 66 percent of this province’s coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) casualties, according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
Of the 990 death toll since the pandemic broke out last year, 651 (as of Nov. 2) were senior citizens.
According Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares- Quiñon, PHO head, a significant number of senior citizens have yet to receive anti-coronavirus shots.
“May ara pa sang sala nga pagpati ang aton mga katigulangan nga naghalin sa sala nga impormasyon,” Quiñon added.
As of Oct. 28, 57,870 senior citizens have been fully vaccinated – nearly 25 percent of the 232,027 target elderly population.
Quiñon appealed to the public to help in the vaccination campaign.
“Edukaron naton ang mga pumuluyo sa barangay,” she said.
Meanwhile, here are the age groups of coronavirus fatalities, according to PHO:
* 61 years old and above – 651
* 51 to 60 years old – 180
* 41 to 50 years old – 76
* 31 to 40 years old – 39
* 21 to 30 years old – 27
* 11 to 20 years old – 10
* one to 10 years old – three
Data also showed 539 (or 54 percent) of these people had comorbidities.
Local government units recording high deaths included Oton (85), Pavia (65), Passi City (59), Tigbauan (50), Miag-ao (46), Santa Barbara (39), Pototan (39), Dumangas (38), Barotac Nuevo (36), Leganes (34), Banate (31), Lambunao (29), Cabatuan (28), Alimodian (27), Guimbal (27), San Joaquin (27), San Miguel (21), Estancia (21), Janiuay (21), and Leon (19).
As of Nov. 2, the province had 34,447 total confirmed coronavirus cases – 1,307 active, 32,150 recovered and 990 deaths./PN
