ILOILO – A 68-year-old male resident of Barangay Poblacion Zone 2, Estancia town died on Aug. 21 at the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
He was positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
The patient was feverish and coughing, according to Dr. Greg Rolan Sumile, municipal health officer of Estancia.
“I still have to talk to the family (for the other) details of this particular case,” said Sumile.
He did not discount the possibility that the patient may have other medical conditions.
The death was not reflected in the Aug. 22 bulletin of the Department of Health (DOH) Region 6.
This was the second Estancia resident to die from COVID-19. The first was a 65-year-old immuno-compromised male resident of Barangay Botongon (Aug. 12). He died at the Western Visayas Medical Center, too.
“He had lung cancer and had been in and out of the hospital,” said Sumile.
As of Aug. 23, Sunday, Estancia’s COVID-19 cases were at 17 (14 local cases, one repatriated overseas Filipino worker and two locally stranded individuals). Here’s the breakdown:

COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China in December 2019.
People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.
These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth./PN
