CENTRAL Philippine University (CPU) Golden Lions and Iloilo Doctors’ College (IDC) Alumni captured the women’s and men’s titles in the 2017 Open Invitational Volleyball Cup in Leon, Iloilo.
CPU Golden Lions, led by Generika Ayala Lifesavers’ Fiola Ceballos, claimed the women’s crown after beating the powerhouse Team Limitless (Buncag) of Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Princess Anne Robles on Dec. 29.
The university’s high school varsity team, meanwhile, salvaged the bronze medal after defeating John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU) in a tight battle for third place.
On its way to the finals, CPU Golden Lions defeated JBLFMU in lopsided fashion, while Team Limitless (Buncag) handily defeated CPU high school varsity.
In men’s volleyball, IDC Alumni took home the championship by defeating CPU Golden Lions while University of San Agustin (USA) College bagged the third place trophy at the expense of Mandurriao Volleyball Club.
In the semifinals, IDC Alumni whipped Mandurriao Volleyball Club while CPU Golden Lions scored an easy victory over USA college varsity squad.
“This event was a success, thanks to the teams that participated and our sponsors,” said Alma Cagalitan Capilastique of the Leon Volleyball Association. “We look to making this a yearly event.”/PN
